Community Action

one member at a time

As coalitions are uniquely designed to create change, they must take action to create these changes in policy, program and practice. Community actions must be related to a subsequent community change. These actions must be facilitated by or on behalf of the Coalition and must be aimed at the issues the Coalition is working on. Please join us in this important work, we take fun breaks. For more info, visit our services page or email us at info@drugfreehighlands.org.

RX Drug Misuse in The United States

The United States is in the midst of an opioid overdose epidemic.  According to the CDC (The Center for Disease Control) Opioids (including prescription opioids  and heroin) killed more than 33,000 people in 2015, more than any year on record. Nearly half of all opioid overdose deaths involve a prescription opioid.

Drugged Driving

According to the 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 10 million people aged 12 or older reported driving under the influence of illicit drugs during the year prior to being surveyed.  After alcohol, marijuana is the drug most often linked to drugged driving. In 2010, more than one-quarter of drugged drivers in fatal crashes were aged 50 years or older.

Prescription Opioids

Opioids have characteristics that inherently make them problematic for long term use. These include risks related to tolerance, sleep disorders, impact on depression with long term use, hypogonadism, suppression of endogenous endorphins, increasing risk in patients over 65, increased risk of addiction, difficulty with use in patients with certain comorbid medical problems (pulmonary, hepatic and renal), and immunosuppression.

Portfolio & Description

DFH was organized as a community coalition in 2003 due to increasing rates of youth substance abuse.

As approved by the Board of Directors in 2008, our mission is to organize, inform, educate, and unite our community in its efforts to reduce substance abuse.

In 2010, DFH shifted its focus towards prevention strategies, including providing information, social marketing campaigns, community prevention events, offering training to members of our community, as well as mobilizing law enforcement to do compliance checks, and enforce existing laws, policies, and procedures.
